In a world that loves the instant - instant communication, instant news, instant photographs - today’s gospel story emphasises the value of learning to wait. The time of the Lord’s return is uncertain. Those who are vigilant and stay alert are rewarded. During their time of waiting they have kept their lamps filled with the ‘oil’ of good works done in love, works which wise disciples keep on doing.
They have learned to wait on the Lord’s timing and their patience is rewarded. The Lord heals their haste. They know that there are times when others can’t be rescued. The foolish need to learn how to take responsibility for their own destiny. The light within that illuminates the darkness can’t be borrowed.
