"It's not about how much you do, but how much love you put into what you do that counts." - Mother Teresa
On the afternoon of Friday the 13th of November, Bishop Michael McCarthy shared the sad news that a much-beloved member of the Rockhampton Diocese, Sr Dolores, had passed away.
Sr Dolores was a pillar of The Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton and led a life of selfless ministry.
Born and raised in Mackay, Sr Dolores studied education in Brisbane, returning to the Mackay region to teach at the completion of her studies. Even after becoming a Mercy Sister in 1958, Sr Dolores continued to teach at many of the Catholic schools in the area. Her service earned her a Queensland Catholic Education Commission Catholic Education Award.
Many would know Sr Dolores from her work in prison ministry. Commencing in 1997, Sr Dolores visited the Capricornia Correction Centre weekly over the course of over two decades to offer prayer services and bible study, celebrate Mass and sacraments, transport families, conduct memorial services and make personal visits to the families of inmates.
Bishop Michael expressed his sadness by saying, “Our sympathies to the Sisters of Mercy who have experienced a great loss, but we know that Sister Dolores is now with our loving God.”
